Sydney University NTEU members condemn Israeli assault on Gaza

At today’s Sydney University branch meeting of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), members overwhelmingly endorsed  a motion presented by Sydney Staff for BDS, condemning Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip. The motion clearly identifies Israel as the aggressor in this conflict, and points to the need for Israel to abandon its oppressive policies in order to achieve peace. After the NTEU voted earlier in the year to curtail discussion of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions strategy to combat the Israeli occupation, this resolution marks an important step forward in promoting the cause of Palestinian justice on campus.

Motion to condemn Israel’s attack on Gaza

That this meeting of NTEU members of the Sydney University Branch:

  • strongly condemns Israel’s attack on the Gaza strip;
  • notes that the way for Israel to end rocket attacks is to end the siege and occupation of Palestinian territory;
  • draws particular attention to the wide ranging use of indiscriminate military force against civilians in Gaza by the Israeli military, which has so far resulted in hundreds of deaths, over half of which are women and children. Members also strongly condemn attacks on medical facilities such as the Israeli military’s attack on al-Wafa hospital in eastern Gaza City. The al-Wafa hospital receives funds from APHEDA, the union aid body, which is funded by member dues;
  • calls on the Australian government to break military ties with Israel;
  • affirms its support for political negotiations between democratically elected leaders in the Middle East to reduce violence, promote human rights and ensure compliance with international law in the region.

  1. “notes that the way for Israel to end rocket attacks is to end the siege and occupation of Palestinian territory”

    The loss of innocent life in Gaza is horrendous of course but get real here! Where on Earth did you get this from?

    The minute Israel ends the blockade on Gaza, Hamas will not “stop the rockets”, it will do what it has always done and vigorously rearm using its billions of Qatari dollars (only more easily), in order to press on with its foundational aim of destroying Israel and killing as many Jews as possible. I really don’t see how there can be any confusion on this: it is the cornerstone of their founding charter (have you read it?), and they trumpet it loudly and repeatedly in television interviews and televised public rallies to anyone who will listen.

    Why would you side so readily with a religiofascist death cult that encourages the “martyrdom” of innocent life? Can you really be so naive? It beggars belief.

  2. Is this satire?

    There are mountains of Palestinian corpses, yet we’re supposed to believe that Hamas is the religiofascist death cult?

    The game’s up, mate. Israel’s lies are as plain as its criminality. Please don’t insult our intelligence any more.

  3. “The Slogan of the Islamic Resistance Movement:

    Article Eight:

    Allah is its target, the Prophet is its model, the Koran its constitution: Jihad is its path and death for the sake of Allah is the loftiest of its wishes.”

  4. The slogan of Israel long before Hamas ever came into existence:

    Palestine is its target, Herzl is its model, The Jewish State is its constitution: Ethnic cleansing and genocide is its path, and Trumpeldor’s ‘It is good to die for our country’ is its motto.

  5. Sorry, where is that directly quoted from? I couldn’t find the source with a web search, whereas I provided you with a source of the clause in “The Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement”. As for the Trumpeldor quote, along with the vast majority of so-called “famous last words”, it is impossible to verify, and even if it were true, is reminiscent of Horace’s famous maxim “Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori”, which has overtly or tacitly been the creed of every national army/soldier in the history of the world since.

    As usual for a BDS drone, clutching at straw men and achieving nothing for the actual plight of the Palestinian people, except for a sustained aura of onanistic smugness. Sad.

  6. Beating around the bush as usual? Which part of the above distillation do you not understand as being applicable to your odious genocidal project in Palestine? And while you’re at it, just to keep you happy, here’s an actual quote from the Daddy of all Israeli ethnic cleansers to chew on: “If I was an Arab leader, I should never make terms with Israel. That is natural; we have taken their country… There has been anti-Semitism, the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz, but was that their fault? They see only one thing: we have come and stolen their country. Why should they accept that?” (Ben-Gurion to Nahum Goldman, The Jewish Paradox, pp 99-100)

  7. Which part of your red herring argument speaks to your apparent disagreement with my sourced assertion that Hamas is a religiofascist death cult, and that the pronouncement that “the way for Israel to end rocket attacks is to end the siege and occupation of Palestinian territory” is manifestly absurd?
