The\u00a0Department of Peace and Conflict Studies<\/a>\u00a0at the University of Sydney,\u00a0Sydney University Staff for BDS<\/a>, and\u00a0a range of pro-Palestinian organisations<\/a>\u00a0including the\u00a0Australia Palestine Advocacy network<\/a>\u00a0(APAN) are calling on supporters of Palestine justice, both activists and researchers, to participate in a two-day conference, \u2018BDS \u2013 Driving Global Justice for Palestine\u2019, which will be held at\u00a0the University of Sydney<\/a>\u00a0on 28-29 July, 2017.<\/p>\n

The keynote speakers are Yousef Munayyer, Executive Director, US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, author, playwright and political commentator Samah Sabawi and Ghassan Hage, Future Generation Professor of Anthropology and Social Theory, University of Melbourne.<\/p>\n

The recent\u00a0UN Security Council resolution<\/a>\u00a0declaring Israeli settlements in \u2018flagrant violation\u2019 of international law and calling for a halt to all settlement activity, followed by Israel\u2019s\u00a0retrospective legalisation<\/a>\u00a0of thousands of settlements on stolen Palestinian land, acutely raises the question of what steps can be taken to promote justice, along with genuine peace, in the region.<\/p>\n

In line with\u00a0the call from Palestinian civil society<\/a>\u00a0for boycott, divestment and sanctions, this conference, held to mark the centenary of the Balfour declaration and the 50th anniversary of Israel\u2019s 1967 occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, will analyse the current politics of BDS in Australia and abroad, reflect on previous BDS activity, and contribute to greater public understanding of the BDS campaign.<\/p>\n

Over thirty papers will be presented by speakers based in Palestine, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Italy, the US, and Japan. Sessions will cover topics such as:<\/p>\n
